LSD, or lysergic acid diethylamide, was discovered in the 1940s. In the 1950s, it was marketed used in psychotherapy and research under the name Delysid.

LSD is a powder that is most often pressed into tabs or in a liquid solution. It leads to a stimulating psychedelic experience that is often accompanied by visual hallucinations, euphoria, and sharpening of the senses. Its ability to enhance introspection has led it to be used in psychotherapeutic settings, such as to address alcoholism and end-of-life anxiety.

In the United States, the Drug Enforcement Agency has listed LSD as a Schedule I drug, meaning it is illegal to buy or possess without a license.
