Cannabidiol, commonly referred to as CBD, is one of over 100 identified cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. CBD can be extracted from either form of the cannabis plant, marijuana or hemp, the former which is officially described (in the United States) as a cannabis plant with greater then 0.3% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), and the latter which is cannabis with under 0.3% THC content.
CBD currently comes in a wide variety of consumables from oil tinctures to edibles to topical ointments. If extracted from low or zero-THC hemp, CBD consumption is completely without any of the psychoactive effects (the ‘high’) generally associated with THC.
CBD’s effects are currently being studied for a wide variety of conditions, but studies that have already been completed show it to have benefits for epilepsy, musculoskeletal pains, anxiety, PTSD, and insomnia. The CBD experience is generally described as calm and mindful, with increased alertness and focus and often mood elevation.
There is currently one FDA-approved CBD medication, Epidiolex, which is a treatment for pediatric seizure disorders.
Hemp-derived CBD is currently legal in all 50 states, but some of those states have significantly stricter regulations than others and the landscape is rapidly changing to respond to the CBD product proliferation.
