Kratom is made from the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree, indigenous to Southeast Asia. It is most often commercially-available as a powder made from crushed leaves.
Kratom acts on opioid receptors in the brain, and has been used as a way to wean people off opioids. Its effects can range from behaving as a caffeine-like stimulant to pain relief and euphoria.
It is currently legal throughout much of the United States, but has been banned in certain states and municipalities.
