Cannabis is used here to refer to medicines from the Cannabis plant containing greater than .3% THC. Whereas much of US law refers to those medicines as ‘marijuana,’ there is a long history of racial bias behind that word, so here we use ‘cannabis.’
The main two species of cannabis are Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica. Cannabis comes in a variety of forms, from a smokable plant to pills to edibles. There are many cannabinoids in cannabis, most famously THC, which is what gives cannabis consumption the traditional psychoactive ‘high.’
Cannabis has been used in medicinal preparations for millennia. It acts on the endocannabinoid system of the body and is known to affect a wide range of physiologic processes. Its effects on users have been reported to include euphoria, sedation, creativity-enhancement, appetite stimulation, and paranoia.
Cannabis’ legality in the US varies by state. It is legal in Canada.
